‘When I was younger, I fell completely in love with working in America. It was ‘74 and I was on a 10-week tour of the States with Elton John. We had a blast.
Although Elton and I are quite different, we had a real simpatico between us. He was such fun to travel with and so generous. He took me shopping
when we got to New York and dragged me around all these really expensive boutiques. I would try on clothes and say, “I’ll just have this one,” but
he would insist I had everything I tried on. It was like Pretty Woman.
One night, we did a show in Madison Square Garden, and Elton had persuaded John Lennon to do a guest spot. We were staying at the Plaza Hotel, which I
love because it’s so glamorous and always in the movies, and John came to see us after the show. It was during the phase when he wasn’t with Yoko,
and he brought May Pang with him, who seemed really sweet.
We all stayed up until dawn, chatting about everything from fish and chips to our love of the north of England, and John told me I should wear black leather, like Suzi Quatro. I had met him briefly before in Hollywood, but I hadn’t really spoken to him, so it was quite an amazing evening. America
was such an exciting place to be then. I was on a roll with work and it really felt like the land of opportunity.
