It’s been a Hard Day’s Night for John McCain … and pundits are already starting the Sarah Palin blame game.
It’s nothing new. Women are often viewed as scapegoats — just ask any Beatles fan, Yoko Ono herself for that matter. She knows what it’s like to be blamed for the downfall of an empire. Last night’s defeat of the McCain/Palin ticket is already inviting fingerpointing — all aimed squarely at Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin.
Many agree Palin has some obvious flaws that led 60% of voters in exit polls to say she wasn’t qualified to step in as President. So is she and she alone responsible for McCain’s staggering defeat? Insiders in the McCain camp would sure like you to think so. Days before the election, anonymous McCain sources already began pegging her as a ‘diva’ and a ‘whack job.’ New York Times writer David Brooks bluntly stated, “She is a fatal cancer to the Republican party.”
But one key fact remains: McCain hand-picked Palin as his running mate. Period. In McCain’s gracious concession speech he eloquently shouldered full responsibility for losing the election — but that won’t stop the public from throwing Palin under the bus. And why not? Women are easy targets, considering misogyny is the last tolerated prejudice. Shouldn’t greater focus be on the many blunders, gaffes and missteps of Mr. McCain? But then again, it’s much easier to blame the girl. Right Yoko?
Will Palin go down in history as the woman who tanked the Republican’s chances at the 44th presidency?
